Decided to play around with color, as you may have noticed. I know the first one isn't really colored like Alias but I thought the character seemed other worldly :]

I got a new do this past Saturday by Carly at Floyd's Barbershop. (She's the one with the Tats)

Since Floyd's Barbershop is associated with Locks of Love I ended up with a complimentary haircut and they were able to send the hair out for me. I'm happy to say this was my 3rd time being able to donate. Woo!

IT'S ALIVE....for now. Sorry for my absence! A full time gig, trying to keep up with freelance, and attempting to get my life back on the healthy track takes away from precious blog time. Don't worry i have a whole stack of drawings that have been piling up since my last post. But for now I'm going to take it one step at a time and post a couple sketches from tonight's Drawing Club of the talented Vikki Paschetto's Steampunk theme.

First day of the new term with Mark was 15Feb11 and wow did we start off with a fantastic model! Poses were 1 min and 3 mins. Luckily the night before class I tried out some 30sec poses from an online Gesture Drawing Tool. It helped to give myself the illusion that the 1min poses were longer.

Update:

Thanks to Mike's comment on a previous post I decided to bring the watercolors back out this session. I ended up having to premix colors in order to speed up the process. So I had gold, dark blue, brown, and skin tone at the ready to quickly lay in color. The top page is almost all watercolor except for the bottom left which is digital, the second page was also colored digitally. Tonight's model was the, always historically accurate, Leslie Marc Halperin.

Glenn Vilppu's Basic Figure and Anatomy class just wrapped up this past Tuesday over at the Animation Guild. Great class, but what else would you expect from Vilppu. Poses in the class ranged from 2 mins - 1 hour. He does a good amount of demos, either by drawing on a tablet PC which is projected on a screen or traditionally with various media.

I haven't drawn in a classical style for quite some time so it was nice to get back into thinking about the actual anatomy.

Sketchbook Update

Goodness, it feels like forever since I last posted, sorry for the gap. I have a stack of backed up figure drawing in queue to scan but in the mean time here are some things from the sketchbook.

A friend of mine recommended that I try going over my sketches again with tracing paper to figure out the shape language. I think over all these turned out much more successful than the originals - and it allowed me to tweak some things. (Highly recommend trying this out yourself)

Sorry for the absence, I have been incredibly busy. Had some new (Amazing!) projects pop up and took a detour to Indiana. That's why there are two weeks missing below.

Started a new round of classes (this time all figurative) at the Animation Guild. Here are the results from Mark McDonnell's Gesture drawing class. I LOVE IT!!! If my memory serves me right these are 2min, 3min, 5min, and possibly 7s(?) We focus on super short poses which makes it really challenging and really fun. Some of the more elaborate ones are poses I really enjoyed and had to take further :]

I don't usually make inspirational posts, but for this incredible find I will make an exception. While at Ringling College of Art and Design I used to frequent Kimbrough library, one of the most amazing places ever. SO MANY high quality rare and out of print art resources. Oh how I miss it!

But anyway, one of my absolute favorite out of print books was "Edwin Austin Abbey: The Record of His Life and Work Vol. I and II" by E. V. Lucas. He is and always will be one of my favorite artist of all time. At one point I found a copy on Amazon but it was way out of my price range. Then I guess someone finally bought it because now it is unavailable. Yesterday while cleaning up my amazon wishlist I decided to find out who holds the copyright to see if it could be reprinted. Instead after a little searching I FOUND IT! Already in PDF form, both Volume I and II and the images are incredibly clear and quite high-res.

Once we're finished we pick a random victim, i mean person, to try and memorize and then draw later from memory, whom we lovingly refer to as "the mark." So these are all characters from memory.

My First Storyboard... you've been warned

So I have been debating on whether or not to post these. And decided since it was my first attempt, why not show it. Then I'll be able to track my progress, which is kind of the whole point of my blog anyway :]
The story changed a lot while I was developing it, primarily in regards to the characters personalities, relationships, and ages (as seen in these early development sketches to the right). So bare with me and this incomplete board. We had a critique last Wednesday which was REALLY helpful and made me see a lot of things I had overlooked. But these are the original boards I pitched. I did get some compliments on my sketching and pitching skills but now I need to focus on what really matters in boarding, the STORY! I have a lot to learn but it is a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to it.

*there were some technical difficulties when trying to upload these so sorry about all the individual images, I tried to make it less involved but Blogger kept shrink them so some couldn't be clicked and others you couldn't see what was going on.

Drawing Club: Jamie Hewlett - Tank Girl

Just watched Tank Girl for the first time Tuesday, and what do you know, the theme for drawing club this week was inspired by Jamie Hewlett, one of the Tank Girl artists (Same guy who does the Gorillaz art). Really awesome stuff if you have never seen it. That seems to be the way my life works though, I always catch the clock at 11:11 and I learn about new things minutes before something about it comes into my life haha. I love it.

Oh, and before I forget! Went to SILA's (Society of Illustrators Los Angeles) Art in the Park last weekend. I've always had an interest in landscape painting and this just reaffirmed that I need to get out and do more of it, whether that be in oils or watercolor.

Storyboarding w/ Gnass: Genre Boards

As some of you know I decided to take Storyboarding over at the Animation Guild with Karl Gnass. It's pretty groovy so far. First assignment was to pick a movie of a specific genre and board a significant scene. I didn't want to go too obvious so I went Rom Com (romantic comedy) with a Twist. That film being
Watching the detectives. One of my all time favorite movies. If you have never heard of it don't feel bad, NO one in my entire storyboarding class had either.
(Feel free to ask questions if something isn't clear!)

And in case you are curious how this was presented. Printed 8.5x14 and I totally had to pitch it! I assume it went somewhat well because everyone was laughing and some people even sounded interested in checking out the movie. And yes I did act out the voices! :]

Oh and the next set of boards will be all my doing, setting up shots and story points. BEWARE it's coming!

Drawing Club: Red Sonja + Captain Kirk

Sorry for the brief absence, I've been super busy with a freelance job and a storyboarding class at the Animation Guild. Sadly could only make it to half the session for Captain Kirk with Keith Klanderud last week. And this weeks Red Sonja theme with Stacey Walker was a packed. I happily stood the whole time, when you spend all day at a desk sitting its actually a nice change, might stand more often. Only thing is my hand starts to get tingly haha. So anyway, I also decided to post some of my less finished pencil sketches for once so you can kind of see how loosely I start.

I have been sending out messages, posting status updates, even using the good old word of mouth method to get out the word about PRES-AID. It seems that there are still not enough people aware of it so here is my attempt to get the word out even further.

PRES-AID: A fund-raising art auction to benefit animator Pres Romanillos

For those who are unaware Pres has suffered a relapse of leukemia, and is in the hospital awaiting a repeat bone marrow transplant. His friends are putting together a charity art auction for his benefit.

The primary auction venue will be live in Burbank on JUNE 20TH doors open at 12noon for registration auction starts at 1pm, there are also some wonderful items available on eBay, and pieces sold by silent auction at the Pres-Aid Auction Reception Friday, June 4, @ 1105 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank. (which was what I attended tonight)

If the items are out of your price range feel free to contribute by Clicking the Donate Button. The Talbert Family Foundation has set up a charitable fund for Pres. 100% of these donations will go to Pres and Jeannine, to pay medical and day-to-day expenses. Donations are tax deductible!

Used brush pen for the quick warm ups and Faber-Castell colored pencil. It was really hard to draw the howler type black moneys near the chimps. Oh my they were going crazy, and it wasn't hard because they were moving, it was hard because I couldn't stop laughing, they were Amazing!!

Gallery Girls: Cowgirls + Indians

I went to the downtown late nite drawing salon again. Used color pencil, watercolor, and my pentel ink brush. Found out my printer paper doesn't take watercolor all too well. Not that it crinkles, just that the fibers absorb color a bit strangely. The color either sits on the surface or becomes fused with the paper fibers. These have been done for QUITE some time now and I just completely keep forgetting to post them. (sorry Chris haha) So without further ado here's some of the stuff I did for Rodney Fuentebella's Environment Design Class over at Concept Design Academy in Pasadena.

Quick explanation: These were designed to be Engywok and Urgl's home from the NeverEnding Story. In case you don't remember those characters they're the really small people who lived in a rock, Engywok was the Scientist/Astrologer who knew about the Oracles, and Urgl was the one who made potions and fixed up Atreyu (I still can't believe that's a band name)

The colors in the actual pose with Jennifer Fabos Patton were white/nude/neutral colors so I perked it up a bit with some bright markers. That's what is so wonderful about taking artistic liberties :P

Wow, what a gorgeous day! Couldn't have asked for better weather. So here's my sketches from today's Zoo trip :] Threw some simple blocks of color behind the sketches to try and bring out the poses a little more. Hopefully it doesn't detract too much from the line work.

Gallery Girls: Super Girl + Wonder Woman

Finally went to the late night drawing salon downtown. It was a pretty good set up but a bit too late for me (10-1), I was starting to get pretty sleepy by the end. One thing that I think helped me stay awake as long as I did though was an awesome "mini" burger and fries for only $5, it was a full meal for me.

I might go again if there's another awesome theme but I just found it a bit slow for my taste. 25 min poses with about 5 min breaks in between, just doesn't allow for much variation, luckily there were two models. You could move around but its a bit packed and I don't like getting in the way. I would recommend getting there early to grab a good spot/table. Oh and it's a suggested $10 donation, which is a great price for what you're getting. And everyone there was really nice and supportive, I probably met more people the first time there than at any other drawing sessions. I'm super shy :]

Oh my goodness, the weather today was terrifying, barely anyone survived the ruthless trip...

Okay, okay so there were no Actual casualties in the line of duty. These were just some Awesome trees I saw at a park next to the pier. After a week of beautiful sunny days, SketchCrawl turned to overcast and very cold wind. And my goodness was it Cold! It was really challenging for me to draw, when it gets too cold out my hands start to lock up and ache really bad. But I fought through for a good couple hours.

So anyway, without further gilding the Lilly here's my sketches from today

It was a fun day despite the weather, got to catch up with friends and draw, what more can a girl ask for. :]

Another LA Zoo day! It was a little harder to get into hard core drawing mode today, I think we're still getting used to being in the heat haha. I know I'm used to being stuck inside constantly, I've probably gotten more sun since the Ren Faire than I've had in YEARS. I'm enjoying it, but my body is having to adjust to the massive amounts of vitamin D.
Anyway, here are the sketches from today in chronological order, pen and graphite. :]

The Led Zeppelin / Jimmy Page theme last night was pretty awesome. I really enjoyed the poses a lot... and all the hair. I was in a quick draw mood last night. So these are just really fast ink gestures, with a graphite lay in to add some simple shadow shapes for form.

Here's a little something from today's LA Zoo trip. The people were some warm ups I did sitting in the chairs near the zoo entrance. As far as the animal drawings go, recently I've been becoming more and more relaxed when I sketch. I used to kind of tense up and rush myself but now I'm taking more time to analyze the anatomy and specifically take note of the underlying structures; like muscle shapes and joint connections. Great day.

Renaissance Fair

So how incredible was my day... so wonderful I can't put it into words so here are some sketches to explain. This was probably the first real weekend that I haven't been working my butt off since I graduated a year ago. I forgot how wonderful spending time with friends can be, you guys are AWESOME! We went to the Renaissance Fair in Irwindale. Too many amazingly crazy characters! Next year we might just have to dress up.

And I'm sure you're curious how these wonderful masterpieces were created. The top is a crayon collaboration of everyone's creativity at the dinner table (you know the whole "I put down a line, I'll raise you a squiggle" game), but all cred for Petunia goes to Brandon, Ahhh! Real Monsters eat your heart out. And the two faces at the bottom are my doodles of Katie and Brandon because I can't sit still. More restaurants should serve crayons and big sheets of paper! :]

I also had a wonderful time touring Hollywood Saturday with Wilson, and if you've never checked out Barnsdall park it is amazing. I could never find any evidence of one of my favorite childhood movies which was "The Story of Robin Hood" and today thanks to him I bought it from Amazon. I'm kind of freaking out. This is seriously the best weekend I've ever had. Hope everyone else had a marvelous weekend!

Sketch Club took a little trip over to the good old dog park. This was an awesome day because I thought I did pretty bad but then I got home and the results weren't as disappointing as I thought WOO. My favorites are Top left, and bottom right, fun day. I mean how could it be bad with Doggies!

What a packed night at the Drawing Club for Daniella Thaub's French Fashion theme! Barely a seat left in the place. I had to sit in the back with my little *poor man's sketchbook on a tall drawing horse. Usually I have room to sprawl out a little so I can use my watercolors but there was no room, so here is my attempt to add color with a Red Col-Erase, and a Schwartz Black Faber-Castell. Fun night. :]

Kind of had a hard time getting into this character and figuring out how I wanted to handle her. The original plan was to brush up on my graphite drawing and after about half the session fighting with the reflective glare from the metallic lead I finally caved and pulled out something different. Ended up playing with various ink pens and still wasn't getting what I wanted. Then I pulled out the brush pen, oh yea, that combined with watercolor saved the evening. These came out a lot more effortlessly and it was much more enjoyable.

Today ended up being VERY productive. Did all the laundry, all the dishes and cleaned the kitchen, took out the trash, checked the mail before going anywhere, and cleaned up the mess that had been gathering from all my classes both in the living room and bedroom (lots of books, homework, and Drawing Club sketches). And on top of all the domestics I got a mark for Sketch Club done and photographed these figure drawings from the first day of Intro to Character Design with David Colman. Whew. And it's ONLY 8!

More experiments. Playing with styles, approaches, shapes. The main ingredients in these were ebony and color pencil, cool greyscale markers, and some ink lines here and there. My past self decided it would be a good idea to drink a coke at tonight's session, resulting in my present self being unable to sleep + a headache. Oh well, now I have one less thing to do, yay productivity! :]

Doodles from "How to Train Your Dragon" Panel at Gallery Nucleus, most of the top images were of the speakers during the presentation. Then instead of waiting in line I drew everyone else in line
Barnes & Noble, hung out there briefly before watching "Green Zone"

Walgreen's, apparently gets pretty crowded around 4pm so if you have the ability to fill prescriptions earlier, I would advise doing so. Again instead of waiting in a huge line I drew people. But they just kept coming so I eventually had to wait in line, hence the back shots of people.
Sketch Club + Chipotle, showed up a little late to Sketch Club so I decided not to eat, then once everyone was done for the day I soldiered off and went to Chipotle and drew people in line.
... Wow ... i drew a lot of people in lines lol ... Welcome to LA! :]

Fabric Studies

Last night in David's class we were blessed with the lovely presence of Sara Streeter dressed in a beautiful flamenco (?) dress with a shawl. She is probably one of the most inspiring models I've ever had the privilege to draw. That one sketch in the bottom left was sooo gorgeous with so much movement, and all she was doing was sitting. Point being if you ever get a chance to draw her, take it, shes fantastic!

So the purpose of this pose was to learn how to handle fabric, both simplifying it and how to elaborate on the underlying forms.
(sorry for the horrible quality, these were on 18x24 and I had to take photos then try and fix the contrast in Photoshop)

The amazing Sara Streeter was our model tonight. Decided to change it up a bit tonight with some pencil. Also tried out some pastels a friend recently gave me (thanks Scott!). Normally I'm horrible at pastel, but this time they worked out. And of course my tried and true markers. :]

Today we sketched at a skate park, it was REALLY challenging. After that I went and checked out a local dog park which was awesome. I got my dog fix and lots of doodling done. Need to work on my canine anatomy and catching both dogs and humans in action. Practice, Practice, Practice!

I needed a personal sketch break really bad tonight. So I sketched this little moment from the dog park where two dogs were fighting over a bright pink Frisbee and walking around like Siamese twins attached to it. Dogs are AMAZING! and i feel refreshed.

Goose is a femme fatale, Ferret is a Napoleonic complex suffering manic detective who is constantly at odds with himself both wanting to eat Goose but needing the reward for her case, and Elephant is a spiky quick witted British sounding Indian Elephant sidekick, the Watson to Ferrets Holmes.

Bradbury Building + Grand Central Market

On location sketches from last Saturday (6Mar10) at Grand Central Market and the Bradbury Building.

Unexpected Event:
While I was attempting to make a sketch of the liquor store (nothing could go wrong here) at the Market a drunk man caused a spectacle yelling at cops and walking in and out of on coming traffic tying up multiple lanes. The disorderly man then chose one lane to yell at the cops from a safe distance, that is until a driver got tired of waiting and started honking, now he's mad at the driver. The drunkard then starts yelling at the driver and eventually slaps the guys side mirror on a seemingly new car. At that moment feeling irritated, rightly so, the driver got out of the car, the drunk man immediately ran away. I need to hunt down a picture of him getting arrested a friend from class captured.

Our model Heather Capps was actually a stunt double for both Uma Thurman and Daryl Hannah's roles in the film. She was super sweet and looked just like Daryl's character Elle Driver.

It was pretty open, you could take the final sketch as far as you wanted. I think my favorite is the second image, of one of the Victorian homes from the historic section of Carroll Street here in LA.
